How do I heal a tattoo?

Materials:

  1. Dial Antibacterial handsoap

  2. Clean paper towels

  3. Aquaphor

If you have a Recovery Derm bandage covering your tattoo:

  1. Leave it on for 3-5 days (if you are instructed to switch the initial bandage to a fresh one the following day, instructions can be found below.)***

  2. After 3-5 days, carefully peel it up to remove in the shower and begin healing routine listed below.

If you have a temporary bandage:

  1. Remove after an hour/when you get home.

  2. Begin healing routine immediately.

Healing routine:

  1. Clean the tattoo gently using your fingertips (no washcloths) with Dial Antibacterial Handsoap and hot water.

  2. Pat (not scrub or scrape) the area dry with a clean paper towel.

  3. Apply a very small amount of Aquaphor.

This routine should be done in the morning, at night, and maybe one extra time during the day if your tattoo was exposed to a grimy environment, such as a gym.

Extra things to note:

  1. Tattoos will flake and peel, especially when you clean them. They may itch as well. Don’t pick at them!

  2. Do not submerge the tattoo in water for the first 2 weeks, this includes baths and swimming. Showers are fine, but don’t soak it under the stream for extended periods of time.

  3. Keep your tattoo protected from the sun, cover it for the first 2 weeks while outside, and after it’s healed, use sunscreen.

***How to apply a new Recovery Derm bandage:

Sometimes, especially for tattoos that have a hefty amount of shading or color, I will send you home with an extra Recovery Derm bandage to apply on the day after your appointment. Here is how to switch it out! NOTE: If someone else is helping you switch the bandage, be sure their hands are clean.

  1. On the day after your tattoo appointment, slowly and gently peel off the first Recovery Derm bandage that you were sent home wearing. Do so in the shower.

  2. Clean the area gently, but thoroughly, using your fingertips with Dial Antibacterial Handsoap and hot water.

  3. Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel.

  4. Peel the white paper backing off of the Recovery Derm patch

  5. Place the patch sticky-side down over the tattoo and smooth onto the area

  6. Carefully peel up the grid using the orange peel tabs.

  7. Leave the new bandage on for 3-5 days.

How is your work station sterilized?

I take my clients' health very seriously, and I have multiple steps I perform when it comes to sanitation. Before every tattoo, I wrap all of my equipment and surfaces that will be touched during the procedure. This includes the top of my work station, my machine, the bed (if it will be used), the arm rest (again, if it will be used), my greensoap bottle, my light. I wear nitrile gloves throughout the entire procedure. I only ever use needles once and they are put into a sharps container to be disposed of immediately after the tattoo. All other disposable items are also thrown away. After the session, I disinfect all of the surfaces and equipment used.
